Mercenary Contracts are unofficial Piracy or Protection tasks given for Credits. These can most visibly be seen when two players from the same Nation or Alliance fight on opposite sides, one of both of which may be outside their Nation's views.

Mercenary contracts have appeared many times in Horizon's End's history, including the Battle of Asteri and the 30 December Incident.
