Transponders are a feature introduced in the Dominion Update in conjunction with new stealth mechanics. Before the update, all players holding controller and/or piloting ships were visible to all players on the /map which made players exceptionally vulnerable if they were unable to protect themselves from pirates or enemy factions. The transponder serves as a toggle for this old feature, allowing players to selectively appear on the map if they so choose. /transponder is a simple toggle command to enable or disable the transponder.

When enabled, the player is ALWAYS visible on the map, even when they are not piloting a starship or holding their controller. This can prove dangerous if a player doesn't have new player protection or is in a deep space system where protection doesn't apply regardless. As such, it's generally recommended to disable the transponder once you understand how intragalactic navigation works.

When disabled, the player is ONLY visible on the map when combat tagged in PVP. While doing so, any ship they are piloting is also visible until the combat tag timer runs out.
